Students will develop and produce web-based instructional materials that include the integration of text graphics animation, sound, and video into a web-based format. The course will address interactivity, ethical, and security issues, among others.
ETEC 525 (Internet Applications for Education and Training) or permission of the instructor.
Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to…
1. understand the importance and concept of using the web for instructional delivery.
2. design, develop, and manage content-rich, high-impact web pages for instruction.
3. use Fireworks to make drawings and edit objects.
4. use Fireworks to optimize graphics and images, perform compositioning, and mask images.
7. use the Dreamweaver web editor to create sites, documents, links, and navigation.
8. use the Dreamweaver web editor to manage web sites, set-up websites, fix broken links, synchronize files on local and remote sites, etc….
9. use the Dreamweaver web editor to insert images, create rollovers and image maps, create and use layers, create and use frames, create forms, and link forms to databases.
10. use the Dreamweaver web editor to handle media such as Shockwave and Flash movies.
11. use Flash to create vector drawings and paintings for objects and perform manipulation of objects.
12. use Flash to create layers, edit layers, mask layers, create symbols and instances of interactive buttons and movies.
13. use Flash to create tweening motions and shapes for live animations.
14. use Flash to create interactive movies with sound.
15. export and publish Flash movies and images.
16. demonstrate solid knowledge, skills, and techniques in identifying and applying appropriate file formats for web content.
17. create web content by hand coding with HTML.
18. work collaboratively as a productive team member to complete a major project.
19. effectively utilize electronic means of communication to work collaboratively in a virtual team.

Regular class attendance is very important. Class participation requires that students be present. Class discussions and group activities that take place during class cannot be made up. If you do miss a class, it is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor in advance, to contact class members to find out what occurred in that class and to make up that work, and then to check with your instructor for any additional assignments. For computer work, it is your responsibility to check for compatibility if you wish to use computers other than those provided in the lab. If you have any questions, contact your instructor.

All works submitted for credit must be original works created by the scholar uniquely for the class. It is considered inappropriate and unethical, particularly at the graduate level, to make duplicate submissions of a single work for credit in multiple classes, unless specifically requested by the instructor. Work submitted at the Graduate level is expected to demonstrate higher order thinking skills and be of significantly higher quality than work produced at the undergraduate level.
Each student will create an individual project using Macromedia Fireworks software. Project details and specific requirements will be discussed in class.
Each student will create an individual website project using Macromedia Dreamweaver web authoring software. Project details and specific requirements will be discussed in class.
Each student will create an individual project using Macromedia Flash software. Project details and specific requirements will be discussed in class.
This course will be “team taught” with ETEC 534, Desktop Publishing, and will require you to collaborate in a team environment within this class and with a virtual team in ETEC 534 for the majority of the semester in order to accomplish the semester project.
Collaboration with your virtual team will take place via UCompass Educator located at https://online.tamu-commerce.edu. The course instructors will assist you with entering this system.
UCompass allows you to send e-mail, chat, post materials, view postings, and participate in discussion forums. In addition, you will be able to check grades and view announcements posted from Dr. Wickersham and Dr. Davis.
The semester project will be a combined effort between ETEC 534 and ETEC 587 in order to create a new look for the Secondary and Higher Education Department at Texas A&M University-Commerce. This will be achieved via designing and launching a new web site (ETEC 587) and new printed materials such as program brochures, flyers, etc (ETEC 534).
There will be two teams in each course and those two teams will be paired to create two virtual teams across the two courses to collaborate on the semester project. A review committee made up of professors, primarily from within the Department of Secondary and Higher Education, will select one set of team projects for publication.
ETEC 587 will be responsible for creating the following:
· Digitization of Logo
· Digitization of Radio Advertisement
ETEC 534 will be responsible for creating the following:
· Informational Flyer
· Radio advertisement
· Print advertisement
ETEC 587 and ETEC 534 will be jointly responsible for the following:
· Needs assessment
· Teams will strive to ensure that the website and print information share commonality among themes, colors, logos, etc. In other words, the website and print material should be complimentary
When designing and developing new promotional materials, it is important to know the needs of the company/individuals you are working for. In other words, you need to conduct a “needs assessment”.
· Research purpose of a needs assessment
· Develop a set of questions to address faculty needs
· Meet with faculty/staff as a group to conduct needs assessment
· Compile data collected and provide to both classes for the creation of the semester assignments

Before you can begin creating the SHED promotional materials, it will be important to gather information about the history of the department, degrees/programs offered, faculty/staff, and much more. An individual interested in pursuing a degree within this department should be able to have the majority of their questions answered via the website and brochures and that material should peak their interest in this department. Based upon the requirements for the webpage (end of syllabus), the needs assessment, and through your research of other departmental webpages, both classes will divide up the information gathering duties.

***Note: The Needs Assessment and Information Gathering Activities will be class efforts rather than small group activities. Project leaders will still be assigned to coordinate overall activities, but in the interest of time and in order to avoid duplication, duties will be divided and shared among all teams.
SHED Logo Development
SHED does not have a current logo that sets it apart from other departments. This logo will be used on print information and the website and will become synonymous with SHED and Texas A&M University-Commerce.
The two teams across classes will work together to develop this logo and will use it on the remainder of assignments – each team in ETEC 534 will hand draw a logo, scan it and send it to their 587 team where it will be digitized. Teams will continue to work together to finalize the look of the logo.

o one for print which only contains a single color and is clear when printed
o one for the website and color brochure which can have multiple colors
· Scalable format
Not everyone has a computer or even Internet access, so we need to explore other possibilities of advertising SHED. You will need to research the requirements for advertising in the school newspaper, The East Texan.
· Develop appropriate advertisement for The East Texan
· Complimentary to website, brochures, etc.
Teams in ETEC 534 will work with Adobe Pagemaker and/or Microsoft Publisher in order to create a color brochure for SHED that will be printed at the TAMU-C print shop for distribution.

College professors make visits to high schools, community colleges, professional conferences, etc. and use this time to advertise program offerings. An informational flyer will be something that can be distributed easily in the packets that are handed out at these events as well as around campus.

ETEC 534 will create one, 30 second radio spot for SHED. This spot will endorse the SHED and Texas A&M University Commerce which will be recorded and placed on the website created in the ETEC 587 course as a MP3 file and on the school radio station KETR (in the works).

Confessional (all ETEC 534 & 587 students)
The confessional will provide you with an opportunity to journal your experience in this course. You will document in detail several areas each week which in turn will help the course instructors collect data on the advantages and disadvantages of teaching and learning via this method. Your journal will be graded on the points addressed, quality, and thoroughness of thought. The confessional must consist of a minimum of 13 entries (one per week) and be in Microsoft Word format. The confessional must be provided to the instructor in electronic form (via disk or e-mail) by the end of the last class meeting of the semester.
