Research interests

  1. The correct way to teach children how to spell?  I’ve conducted many studies over the past 20 years and continue to study this issue with my graduate students. It appears our current spelling curriculum is not only ineffective but a waste of time. Recent research shows there are definite research supported strategies that do work and work effectively.
  2. The biggest challenges facing classroom teachers today.   In the past, culture and ethnicity were the major areas of study. These no longer appear the biggest issues... The great conflict today appears to be (a) our state expectations that all children achieve at grade level and (b) the extreme difference in the abilities and achievement of our children that make the state’s expectations unattainable and unrealistic
