TITLE:
We Have Computers!! Now What?
SUBJECT:
Elementary School Technology Awareness
GRADE LEVEL:
Elementary school inservice teachers "New Users"
OBJECTIVES:
- Become aware of Internet sites for teachers
- Choose a site of interest
- Become aware of the application Hyperstudio.
- Decide on a Hyperstudio activity for their class
- Become aware of how other teachers integrate technology into their classrooms
- Decide on an activity they could do using technology
RESOURCES/MATERIALS:
- Computer with Internet access and Netscape
- CD-ROM drive
- Computer Projection Equipment
- Hyperstudio 3.0 Preview CD
ACTIVITIES:
- Trainer introduction followed by participant introduction including information on 1 way they currently use computers. Also one way they would like to learn about computers to improve instruction in their classroom.
- Load Netscape and bring up Education, Schools, and Young People Related Links. Have participants pick one link to go to and explore. First together and then another to look at later individually or in a group.
- Load the Hyperstudio 3.0 Preview CD and show examples of student work. Participants discuss by grade level how they could incorporate Hyperstudio in their classroom. Groups may share ideas with each other. .
- Access Busy Teachers' WebSite. Display lists of lesson plans and activities they can get over the Internet. Participants will write down an area of interest they could look up later.
- Display lesson plan from Classroom Connect Summer 1996 entitled "Learn to find the best pizza buy." ( Any other lesson plan that integrates technology will also be fine.) Discuss the objectives and how technology enhances the activities. Participants begin thinking of a subject and a lesson that they could do that would incorporate similar Internet acyivities.
FOLLOW-UP:
Evaluation will be by informal observation of teachers in computer lab using Internet. Usage could be for professional growth or integration in classroom activities. Teacher or student projects using Hyperstudio will also be evidence of interest. Follow-up activities will include mini-lessons on different aspects of Netscape and Hyperstudio.
