The National Parks/Science Resources

By gathering resources on the Internet, the teacher has a wealth of information available to build curriculum. It is also a way to find prior sites for students to use as research for their projects.

In the following sections you will find resources from publishers with information to support curriculum, lesson plans about many subjects K-12, and a special section dedicated to "The National Parks". You will find excellent sites to help teachers gather information to create integrated curriculum utilizing the national parks as a focus. There are several examples of lessons created utilizing this information.

Scholastic, Inc.: At this site there are literature connections, electronic journal information, and Instructor magazine free materials information. You will also find the "Global Community Project" which is a good way to research your community and share it with others.
National Geographic: This site includes reviews of the current magazines and behind the scenes with photographers, writers, and artists. A special link for kids to their World Magazine is very interesting.
Environmental News Network: This site offers daily environmental news. Planet ENN is an online weekly magazine that provides an in-depth look at important ecological topics. ENN's Navigator is a collection of hundreds of the best environmental stops on the Internet. The GLOBE Program is an interesting link from ENN. This is a worldwide network of (K-12) students, teachers and scientists to study and understand the Global environment.

Schoolhouse: This site provides comprehensive educational resources, projects, discussions, interactions, collaborations, lessons, curriculums, and standards for grades K-12.
Enviro Link: This is an extensive site with links to many projects, news, lesson plans, resources and interesting sites like "Earth Works" that provides a simulation for third and fourth grade students.
Web Sites and Resource for Teachers (K-6): This site is well organized to find lessons by grade level and subject. There are eight different categories including many resources. A special category is called "Just for Kids" with some fun activities to do.

The National Parks

The Total Yellowstone Page: This site has extensive information on the Yellowstone National Park. The links provide great research for teachers to do a more indepth study of one park and create integrated curriculum.
GORP-US National Parks and Preserves Resouce List: This site searches national parks and provides information on activities, attractions, locations, educational opportunities and much more.
National Parks and Conservation Association: National Parks information and the latest news on this Association's activities, newsletter, outdoor recreation groups and congressional e-mail addresses can be found at this site.
The National Park Service Park Net: Through the ranger on the home page you can visit all of the parks. This site also provides more extensive information with "Links to the Past", "Nature Net", "Information Zone" and "Park Smart".
The Bear Den: This is a great site for information about bears. One link goes to the Cub Den, which is written for the younger children.

Lesson plans integrating Internet activities into The National Parks

The National Parks: This is an introductorylesson to understand the meaning of a park, specifically a national park, and find the locations of the 54 National Parks. It covers several subject areas in the process.
We Are All Unique: This lesson promotes the understanding of habitats and the basic needs for survival for people and animals. Research of an animal and its habitat is required to understand why different animals need unique habitats. Comparisons/differences will be discussed through sharing of the research.
Earth Works: This is a link to a program that has eight core lessons that focus on scientific methods of testing and investigation, working together, making decisions, and communicating information to others. Third and fourth grade students become investigators of various habitats.
