Created by Bruce Ellis, Dallas ISD
MATERIALS: Computer, Internet connection, graphical web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mosaic, etc.) and printer.
PROCEDURE:After introducing basic geometry concepts (various shapes, patterns, symmetry, and/or tessellations), the students visit the URL for "The Kirk Collection" at http://auntie.com/kirk/quiltshow.htm . Here students choose a quilt to view. After clicking on the thumbnail of the quilt, a larger view will come up with information. The student is to make note of the following:
After the class has compiled a collection of their quilt findings, have them share different shapes they found in the quilts. Which were the most/least common shapes? Ask students to compare prices with the designs. Have them come up with a reason(s) why the most expensive quilts were more costly than the others - lead students in considering the shapes involved, their size, materials used, etc.
EXTENSION:
Have students locate history of given quilt names, encyclopedias, quilting guilds, and even older family members. Use Alta Vista Search Engine to begin your search for more on quilts!
