Lesson Plan: Internet Scavenger Hunt

OBJECTIVES:
- To practice searching skills on the World Wide Web.
- To practice multitasking and switching between two open programs.
- To practice copying and pasting skills.
- To practice using a word processing program.
- To become more familiar with computer history and terminology.
RESOURCES/MATERIALS:
- A computer for each student or group, connected to the World Wide Web. The computer should provide access to a word processing package and be connected to a printer.
ACTIVITIES:
Students use various search engines on the web to locate as many of the following items as they can in the allotted time. Students may work in pairs, or individually. When the students find a requested item on the Web, they will copy it and paste it into a word processing document, and type a brief description above the item in the document. Students should save their word processing documents frequently, and print out the documents when through.
- A picture of the first computer bug, and a picture of the person credited with discovering the first computer bug.
- A picture of the two founders of Apple Computer Corp.
- A picture of Bill Gates, and a copy of his famous quote regarding computer memory in 1981.
- A description of InterNIC.
- A collection of smileys.
- The Windows 95 Easter Egg.
- A product specification sheet (that includes product features and requirements) for any software that we use (or will use) in this class.
- A copy of a current (today?) article regarding computers.
FOLLOW-UP:
Discuss the keywords students used in performing their searches. Verify in class that they found the correct information. Discuss the various items that the students found, and discuss why they had different results at times. Discuss the advantage of multitasking, and copying and pasting techniques. Provide a list of URLs where answers to the items can be found.
