Darla Meek serves
as Lecturer in Music Education at Texas A & M University-Commerce,
teaching undergraduate music education classes and supervising
student teachers.
Prior to this position, she was
the music and movement specialist at Rugel Elementary
School in Mesquite , Texas .
Last spring, her entire fifth grade class was selected to
perform an original music and movement production for
the Orff Teachers reception
at the annual Texas Music Educators Conference in San
Antonio .
She earned a Bachelor’s of Music Education from Dallas Baptist
University , and a
Master’s of Music at Southern Methodist University in Dallas .
She earned her Orff certification
and Master Class at SMU, and apprenticed in Basic Pedagogy at
University of St. Thomas
in Minnesota . Darla teaches both pedagogy and movement for
Orff Levels courses.
Darla taught music in elementary schools for fifteen years.
She served the Mesquite Children’s
Chorus and the Children’s Chorus of Collin County as assistant
conductor and choreographer,
and served as Children’s Choir Coordinator for three area
churches.
Darla has written three children’s choir curricula for Lifeway Christian
Resources in Nashville ,
and often presents workshops and clinics for teachers in Texas and
Louisiana . She serves as
Vice President of the North Texas Chapter of the American Orff
Schulwerk Association, and
presented two sessions on movement for the AOSA National Conference
in November 2008.
Darla is married to music educator and performer Keith Meek and has two
children, Gregory (15)
and Aubrey (13), who are both young musicians!
