Biography
 
David L. Brown is a professor of Early Childhood Education at Texas A&M University at Commerce. Dr. Brown has served in many roles throughout the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. These roles include chair of the Curriculum and Instruction Tenure & Promotion Committee, a member of the Department's Scholarships Committee and Co-coordinator of the Master's Program in Early Childhood Education. Presently, Dr. Brown serves as chair of the Department's IRB committee. Prior to his work at A & M University - Commerce, Dr. Brown taught Kindergarten, First grade and a Kindergarten/First mixed age class in the Dallas public schools.
 

He is considered by many to be a leader in the preschool movement and a recognized researcher in the areas of Emergent Literacy and Early Childhood Education. Dr. Brown teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Early Childhood Education and Research Methodology.

 

He has served on the Editorial Board of The Association For Childhood Education International. Professor Brown is a frequent presenter at the American Educational Research Association, Texas Association for the Education of Young Children, National Association for the Education of Young Children, Southern Early Childhood Association, National Head Start Research Conference and many other professional organizations.

 

His research and writings have focused on Print Awareness, Classroom Quality, Language and Literacy Development in Young Children, Teacher Change, Mixed-aged Classrooms, Family Involvement in Children's Learning and Emergent Reading . Dr. Brown has collaborated in the development and implementation of a state-funded training program for child care personnel in Texas .

 

Currently, He serves as the Principal Investigator of the Early Childhood Educators Professional Development Project. He has been a consultant to the Department Education, Texas Mental Health and Retardation, Texas Education Agency, and numerous other institutions and school districts across the country.

 

He has several publications on Literacy and Young Children. Dr. Brown holds membership in the National Association for The Education of Young Children, Association for Childhood Education International, National Head Start Association, Society for Research in Child Development, American Educational Research Association, and the International Reading Association.

 

Additionally, Professor Brown has been active in the North Texas Area Federation Early Childhood Committee where he has served as President and Secretary.

 

Finally, Professor Brown currently serves as a National Advisor for a popular children's television program - Sesame Street.
