Minutes for Popular Communication Division
2002 Winston-Salem, NC
The Popular Communication Division met at 8 am on Saturday April
6th.
Vice-chair Margeret D'Silva presided. She offered a positive
report on the
2002 convention and reminded us of the upcoming locations for SSCA:
2003,
Birmingham; 2004, Tampa; 2005, Baton Rouge. The conference theme
for
2003
is "Brave New Worlds: Communicating in Times of Crisis."
Discussion
followed regarding panels and papers that might reflect the conference
theme
as well as the unique location of Birmingham, Alabama. There was
consensus
on the desire to pursue off-site panels and integrate
communication
professionals such as the directors of various museums into the
programming.
Other topics that fostered discussion included analysis of post 9-11
films
and the growth of "militainment," Memorial efforts regarding 9-11,
and
museums as popular culture. J. Emmett Winn succeeds Margaret
D'Silva as
Vice Chair and will plan the Birmingham panels. Emmett is also serving
as
the Pop Com representative to the SSCA Nominating Committee. Rick
Olsen
was elected to Vice Chair Elect and will plan the Tampa panels.
Tony DeMars
was elected to serve as Secretary and volunteered to become the
Popular
Communication page webmaster. The session was visited by Larry
Frey and
Martha Solomon Watson as part of their campaign for NCA Vice President
Elect.
