Minutes of the Popular Culture Division: March 30, 2000
The Popular Communication Division meeting was called to order
at 11:00
a.m. Division Chair
Trudy Hanson welcomed division members and distributed copies of the
proposed division bylaws.
Mary Jackson Pitts of Arkansas State moved and Margaret D'Silva of
the University of Louisville
seconded the motion to accept them as written. The motion carried.
Trudy Hanson will submit a copy of the
bylaws to the SSCA Executive Director.

Margaret Usha D'Silva of the University of Louisville was
elected to
the office of Vice Chair-Elect and
J. Emmett Winn of Auburn University was elected to the office of SSCA
Nominating Committee
Representative. Wendy Haijar, Vice Chair, reported that 18 papers had
been programmed for the 2000
convention and she was successful in recruiting participation by
members
from the Midwest. The top
student paper award went to Brian E. Johnston from the University of
Arkansas and the Top Division
paper was written by Benjamin R. Bates from the University of Georgia.
Mary Jackson Pitts, Vice
Chair-Elect, asked for volunteers to assist with the 2001 SSCA
Convention
planned for April 4-8 in
Lexington, Kentucky. The convention theme is "Narratives We Live By:
Redefining the Power of
Communication." Jim Vickery of Troy State suggested that we schedule
a round table in which
participants could define "popular communication."
Jim Vickery moved and J. Emmett Winn seconded the motion that
the meeting
adjourn.
The motion carried and the meeting adjourned at 12:10 p.m.
