Minutes from SSCA Meeting: April 9, 1999, 7:10 a.m.

Craig Klein, Chair of the Popular Communication Division called the meeting to order and announced the 2000 SSCA Convention theme: 
"Our Century: United and Leading with Confidence." Craig presented a report from the SSCA Executive Committee and told about proposed 
changes (a dues increase, a change in the name of the teaching excellence award) that would be discussed in the associational business 
meeting. He indicated that one of the concerns was that there was a dearth of leadership in that few people seem to be willing to serve 
in association-wide offices. He also indicated that a new division had been formed--the Political Communication Division.

Elections for division officers were held. Mary Jackson Pitts of Arkansas State was named as the Vice-Chair Elect. Richard Olsen of the 
University of North Carolina, Wilmington, was named as secretary.  There was discussion about the time of the business meeting with 
some people expressing interest in having an evening business meeting, combined with a social event. Panel ideas discussed for the 2000
convention included having a spotlight panel of a Popular Communication Scholar. Craig Klein volunteered to coordinate this.

Trudy Hanson, division Vice Chair, distributed a written report about the 1999 convention panels. Six panels, as well as the business 
meeting were accepted by the convention planners. Thirteen papers were chosen by reviewers for presentation in a special showcase format. 
The top student paper was written by Charles Soukup of the University of Nebraska--Lincoln and the top faculty paper was authored by
Maria E. Len-Rios and Hal W. Fulmer of Georgia Southern University.

Wendy Hajjar, of the University of New Orleans, will be planning the division's programs for the 2000 convention. She asked for
volunteers to serve as reviewers for panels and papers. The meeting adjourned at 8:05 a.m.
